The Ontario Energy Board approved an increase in natural gas prices effective January 1, 2017, of 3.3 cents per cubic meter (or about 20%), for facilities too small to participate in Ontario’s Cap & Trade program. This may have a large negative impact on your facility’s operating cost.
To offset the gas price impact, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) in partnership with the Government of Ontario launched a new $25 million SMART Green program on November 8 that helps manufacturers improve their gas-related energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and reduce gas costs. The program supports industry with grants of 50% up to $10,000 for feasibility assessments and up to $200,000 for capital projects that save natural gas and reduce GHG emissions.
If your manufacturing facility is not participating in Ontario’s Cap & Trade program, then you are eligible for applying for the SMART Green Program.
Funding is being awarded weekly on a best-application basis, but only until funding is used up. For more information on SMART Green, go to https://cmeweb.crm.eperformanceinc.com/smartgreen/.
